Free child health and development checks
The first 5 years of a child’s life are an important time for physical growth and development.
During this time, the brain and body grow at their fastest rate, shaping language, social skills, emotional wellbeing and children’s thinking skills.
Free health and development checks, including age-appropriate screening activities are available for children from birth to 5 years, living in South Australia.
These screenings support families and children to grow, learn and thrive, and can connect you with the right early health and/or development supports, if needed.
What is a child health and development check?
A child health and development check is a friendly appointment with a qualified health professional . Together, you’ll talk about your child’s health and wellbeing, and get practical tips that support your family’s goals.
When to book
Child health and development checks are recommended at these key stages in your child’s early years:
- 1 - 4 weeks
- 8 weeks
- 6 - 9 months
- 12 months
- 18 - 24 months
- 3 years; and
- 4 - 5 years.
Children can be seen at any age if you have questions or concerns.
What’s covered?
Each child health and development check looks at your child’s whole development, and provides practical, family-friendly advice on things like:
- Physical health - growth, feeding, sleep, hearing and vision
- Development – talking, moving, playing, learning
- Social and emotional wellbeing – how your child interacts and manages feelings; and
- Parenting support – help with sleep, behaviour, toilet training, safety, nutrition, and more.
Getting ready for your appointment
- Bring your child’s Blue Book or any other health records to record your child's growth and development.
- If you need an interpreter or cultural support, let your provider know when you book.
- You are welcome to bring along another family member or support person.
