Provisionally Registered Teachers Mentoring Program

The Provisionally Registered Teachers (PRT) Mentoring Program (the Program) supports PRTs to transition to full registration. The Program providers tailored mentoring opportunities by connecting PRTs with highly skilled and experienced qualified Early Childhood Teachers (ECTs).

Built around individual needs, the Program offers flexible, tailored support through 1:1 or group mentoring coupled with site visits from mentors and peer-to-peer learning opportunities. The Program is particularly valuable for those who need comprehensive, accessible support to meet their full teacher registration requirements, including teachers who are professionally isolated, or in rural or regional areas.

The Program has been intentionally set up to complement and leverage the skillset of South Australia’s experienced early childhood teaching workforce, connecting provisionally registered teachers (PRTs) with experienced ECTs as mentors for ongoing guidance and support.

Experienced ECTs are encouraged to join as mentors, with the program offering a valuable professional development opportunity to build leadership skills and contribute to building a high-quality early childhood workforce.

Provisionally Registered Teachers

PRTs seeking support to transition to full teaching registration are encouraged to apply for the program.

Depending on the level of support required, the program offers:

  • 1:1 mentoring with a suitably matched qualified ECT; or
  • group sessions, led by a highly skilled, qualified ECT.

In addition, all participants receive:

  • allocated time away from the service to complete the teacher registration portfolio
  • on-site mentoring support; and
  • peer learning and professional networking through Communities of Practice.

Program participation is free for all accepted participants.

Experienced Early Childhood Teachers

Experienced ECTs with a passion for helping fellow teachers early in their career are encouraged to apply for the program.

This unique and valuable mentoring opportunity will allow ECTs to:

  • share skills, knowledge and experiences with the next generation of ECTs
  • undertake professional development to build mentoring skills
  • participate in 1:1 mentoring sessions with a matched mentee
  • grow as a leader and contribute to sector-wide quality improvement
  • build meaningful peer learning connections with other highly experienced ECTs.

Mentors must hold their full teaching registration and be available to mentor a PRT outside of their own service or provider.

Early childhood services

The Program is open to staff at both Flying Start partner and non-partner services.

Services with a staff member participating in the program will receive PRT Mentoring Program funding to support the release of their teachers to participate in the program.

How do I register my interest?

Expressions of interest (EOI) will open soon through Early Childhood Australia, for both PRTs and qualified, experienced ECTs.

The PRT Mentoring Program will commence in Term 4 2026, with further intakes in 2027. Places are limited and subject to program capacity.

Once an application has been submitted, applicants will be contacted by Early Childhood Australia (ECA).

The PRT Mentoring Program is funded by the Office for Early Childhood Development and delivered by Early Childhood Australia (ECA) as part of the Government of South Australia’s Flying Start reforms

Participation in the program is subject to program capacity as determined by ECA.
