Description

This program aligns to the Knowing level of the Aboriginal Cultural Safety Training Content Framework. It explores key concepts such as appropriate terminology, historical impacts (pre and post colonisation), intergenerational impacts, and engaging with Aboriginal peoples. This training builds participants’ understanding of Aboriginal culture, history, and community engagement to foster culturally safe and respectful practice.
  • Terminology: Participants will learn key cultural terms such as mob, Country, identity and kinship, and explore distinctions between a Welcome to Country and an Acknowledgement of Country. The focus is on using respectful language that honours Aboriginal identity, connection and community.
  • History: Training incorporates truth-telling about colonisation, the 1967 Referendum, and the Stolen Generations, deepening understanding of how historical events and policies continue to shape social and cultural realities today.
  • Intergenerational impacts: Participants will examine how intergenerational trauma, cultural disruption and systemic barriers have influenced community wellbeing, family structures and trust in services, deepening empathy and awareness of lived experiences.
  • Engaging with Aboriginal people: The program explores communication protocols, cultural safety and building relational trust through two-way listening and local respect. It also challenges stereotypes and unconscious bias, encouraging reflection on how personal and organisational behaviours affect engagement.
The training supports participants to strengthen their cultural capability, enhance self-awareness, build meaningful relationships, and contribute to inclusive, respectful and responsive practices with Aboriginal Communities. Expected outcomes for this program are:
  • increased cultural understanding of Aboriginal culture, history and terminology, including key concepts such as mob, Country and kinship
  • improved self-awareness through reflection on personal values, attitudes and unconscious bias and
  • respectful communication and engagement, using culturally appropriate language, protocols and behaviours when interacting with Aboriginal people and communities.
