Description
This service is delivered by an occupational therapist through a group-based, capacity-building approach. Support focuses on working collaboratively with educators and centre leadership to identify participation barriers and strengths within the preschool environment. Strategies are embedded within existing routines such as group time, transitions, play, and self-care.
Delivery includes observation, educator coaching, collaborative problem-solving, and on-the-floor modelling to support consistent implementation of inclusive practices. Educators are supported to adjust environments, routines, and tasks to meet diverse needs across groups of children.
Services are typically delivered over a series of sessions across a term, with a focus on building sustainable practices that continue beyond direct occupational therapy involvement.
- Increased educator confidence to identify participation barriers within everyday routines
- Improved ability to implement inclusive, routine-based strategies supporting regulation, engagement, and participation
- Increased use of environmental and task adjustments to support diverse needs
- Greater consistency in inclusive practices, improving children’s participation and engagement
How this is delivered
Services are typically delivered over a series of 8–12 sessions across a term, with sessions scheduled weekly or fortnightly. Each session is approximately 60 minutes and may be delivered in person or online, depending on service needs.
Delivery includes observation within everyday routines, educator coaching, collaborative problem-solving, and on-the-floor modelling. Sessions occur both off the floor (planning and reflection) and on the floor (modelling strategies within play, group activities, transitions, and self-care routines).
Support is embedded within existing preschool programs rather than delivered as a separate intervention. Educators are supported to adapt environments, routines, and tasks to improve participation and engagement across groups of children.
Resources and practical strategies may be provided to support implementation, with a focus on sustainable practice beyond direct occupational therapy involvement.
