Description
Our approach works alongside educators within play, routines, and shared activities. Occupational therapy is integrated into everyday interactions, supporting executive function, sensory processing, regulation, and motor development to build engagement and capacity within natural learning contexts.
Educators are supported through in-room coaching, modelling, and reflective discussion. This includes practical strategies such as adapting environments and routines, supporting sensory and regulation needs, and creating opportunities for children to engage, make choices, and participate in ways that are meaningful to them.
Our work is grounded in a neurodiversity-affirming and human rights-based approach. We understand regulation, behaviour, and participation as meaningful and shaped by the environment, the task and the person’s individual strengths, and support educators to respond in ways that reduce barriers and increase access to engagement, relationships, and learning.
Families are included through collaboration to support consistency across home and preschool environments.
Expected outcomes for this support are:
- Improved educator capability to support participation, self-care (e.g. toileting), and sensory needs (Physical Health & Wellbeing)
- Increased understanding of regulation and neurodiversity (Emotional Maturity)
- Improved ability to adapt environments, tasks and routines to support engagement and the person’s needs (Language & Cognitive Skills)
- Increased capacity to support participation in play, routines, and peer interactions (Social Competence)
How this is delivered
Support typically runs over a term-based block (approximately 5-8 weeks), with sessions weekly or fortnightly. Each visit is 60-90 minutes and includes observation, in-the-moment coaching, small group support, and brief reflective discussion.
A qualified occupational therapist works as an external facilitator and coach, with educators as active participants. The focus is on embedding strategies into everyday practice.
Coaching occurs within real interactions through modelling, supported practice, and collaborative problem-solving. Strategies focus on supporting participation by adapting environments, routines, and tasks to enable meaningful engagement across activities and settings.
Educators are supported between visits to trial and refine strategies, with practical resources provided to support consistency. Where appropriate, families are included to support shared understanding across home and preschool environments.
