Description

Now and Next is an award-winning, evidence-based parenting program that empowers parents and carers of children, including children with disability or developmental delay, to achieve positive outcomes for their child, family, and themselves. Developed by Plumtree Learning, the program integrates positive psychology, family-centred practice, and strength-based coaching, fostering empowerment, resilience, and self-advocacy. Parents are supported to identify a clear vision, set and achieve goals, reflect on their family’s strengths, and build confidence for the future. The program uses the innovative Pictability planning tool—a visual and engaging resource that helps families plan their next steps in a positive and structured way. Now and Next is designed for all families, including those in rural areas or from diverse backgrounds, and encourages peer connection and shared learning. It provides tools and strategies that families can use well beyond the program to support their child’s development. Expected outcomes for this program are:
  • improved ability to implement strategies to support communication practices at home
  • improved understanding of social skill development in early childhood
  • improved ability to implement strategies to support social skill development
  • improved confidence in promoting cognitive development through play.

How this is delivered

Now and Next is delivered as a group-based program over 8 weeks, with one 2.5-hour session per week. Sessions can be held in-person, online, or in a hybrid format, offering flexibility for families and services. Delivery can take place on-site at early childhood services, in community spaces, or any location families feel comfortable. Sessions are facilitated by trained I Can Jump Puddles peer facilitators and are interactive, practical, and family-friendly. The program includes guided activities and peer discussion, using the Pictability visual tool to help families set and achieve meaningful goals. Groups require 10 participating families. To reach this number, multiple sites are welcome to collaborate and nominate families together. Now and Next aligns with early childhood best practice, supports family engagement, and complements play-based learning, enhancing collaboration between parents, educators, and allied health professionals to support children’s developmental outcomes.
