Last week Minister Hood announced a new program to boost the skills of early childhood educators and teachers delivering 3-year-old preschool and improve quality across the sector.

The $2.5 million professional development program, Enhancing Quality, will give partner preschools access to further training and strengthen workforce capabilities.

The program focuses on 3 key areas – educational program and practice, relationships with children, and leadership and governance – to improve developmental outcomes for children, lift standards and better equip staff.

Services will receive funding at the start of 2027.

Further information will be provided as part of the upcoming changes to the Policy and Funding Guide.

A Place for Culture is delivered by SNAICC – National Voice for our Children and supports educators and leaders to build inclusive early learning environments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.

A Place for Culture provides opportunities to:

  • deepen your understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and ways of knowing, being and doing, and how these shape children, families and communities today
  • grow your awareness of why a strong cultural identity is a protective factor for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children
  • connect your learning to the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 and the National Quality Standard, exploring how culturally responsive practice builds a strong foundation for belonging, being and becoming
  • build knowledge, confidence and capability to develop strong, respectful and reciprocal relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities
  • create welcoming, culturally rich learning environments where all children learn and engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories.

The Australian Government in collaboration with Deloitte Access Economics is running the ‘Early Education Service Delivery Prices project.

The project will:

  • examine key areas required to deliver safe and quality ECEC (e.g. fair wages, property costs and utilities)
  • contact providers asking for cost data and cost drivers
  • support providers in participating in the project
  • review and calculate the reasonable cost of providing safe and quality ECEC
  • analyse additional costs of service delivery for higher-needs cohorts
  • provide us with data, models and analysis to inform future policy.

All CCS-approved providers and services can participate -look out for an email from Deloitte Access Economics (EESDP@deloitte.com.au) which will provide you access to a secure online portal.

By taking part, you will help:

  • ensure the data reflects the diversity of the sector
  • inform future reforms
  • pave the way to universal ECEC.

See the Australian Government Department for Education website for more detail about the project and additional supports available.
