Expected outcomes for this program are:
- improved ability for children to understand and regulate their emotions through participation in sensory-motor groups and co-regulation strategies embedded into daily routines
- enhanced educator capacity to model and teach emotional regulation by implementing evidence-based training leading to greater child participation, enhanced wellbeing and inclusive learning environments
- increased emotional resilience and coping skills in children, supported by play-based interventions that encourage emotional awareness, co-regulation and self-regulation
- improved family understanding of emotional development and regulation strategies, achieved through practical, accessible workshops and take-home resources that align with neuroaffirming care.
How this is delivered
Services are designed to seamlessly integrate into existing play-based, teacher-led preschool programs, (enhancing, rather than disrupting) established routines. A multi-tiered approach is used, adding a distinct occupational therapy lens to early learning:
- Professional development training: 12 evidence-based topics for educators and tailored workshops for parents, grounded in developmental and emotional regulation frameworks.
- Targeted intervention groups: Designed and co-facilitated by occupational therapists using sensory-motor and emotional regulation strategies aligned with AEDC outcomes.
- Empowering educators: Coaching and mentoring equips staff to embed therapeutic strategies into play and routines, increasing developmental intentionality.
- Play as a therapeutic tool: using play-based interventions within groups to support emotional regulation, social skills, motor development and school readiness.
- Engagement and inclusion: adapting activities, resources and environments to meet diverse needs in groups, promoting inclusivity and participation.
