Description

A Practical Approach to Big Feelings, Behaviour, and Regulation is an evidence-informed program that translates research from neuroscience, child development, attachment and trauma into practical strategies educators can use with children aged 3–6.

Participants gain a clear understanding of how the developing brain shapes behaviour and regulation, along with practical tools to respond effectively to challenging behaviour and emotional dysregulation while supporting children's social and emotional development.

The program comprises four sequenced components: a 3 hour workshop, the Dear You Love From Your Brain children's book, a structured lesson plan for embedding strategies into everyday play-based routines, and a follow-up coaching session supporting classroom implementation.

This program is aimed to help you to:

  • understand how the developing brain shapes behaviour and regulation
  • respond to challenging behaviour in ways that build connection and relational safety
  • teach children about feelings, behaviour and a growth mindset and
  • embed regulation strategies into everyday routines and play.

Expected outcomes for this program are:

  • improved understanding of child neurodevelopment and how the brain shapes feelings, behaviour and regulation
  • improved ability to model and teach emotional regulation strategies
  • improved ability to respond to challenging behaviour and dysregulation in ways that build connection and relational safety and
  • improved ability to support social engagement and inclusive practice across the service.

How this is delivered

  • Educator training: 3-hour workshop delivered by Karen Young to groups of educators. Covers the neurodevelopment of children, attachment and relational safety, the relational conditions children need to thrive and the educator's role in providing them, the impact of trauma on behaviour, practical regulation strategies, how to teach children about feelings and behaviour, building a growth mindset, mindfulness techniques, and how to respond to challenging behaviour in ways that build connection and relational safety and lower future critical incidents. One-hour post-workshop group coaching session via Zoom (included in training package), scheduled each semester to support educators embedding strategies into daily practice.
  • Resources: each participant receives a copy of the Dear You Love From Your Brain children's book for classroom read-aloud and discussion, plus a structured lesson plan with sequenced play-based classroom activities.

Three training delivery options:

  • (1) Educators attend a public workshop at a scheduled metropolitan or regional location, or
  • (2) In-house delivery face-to-face at the ECEC service for the whole educator team, or
  • (3) In-house live online delivery via Zoom.

All three options include all four program components.
