Description

Phonological awareness is one of the strongest predictors of later reading and writing success. Research demonstrates that children develop phonological awareness through rich experiences with songs, rhymes, stories, wordplay and listening games. These multisensory experiences strengthen auditory discrimination, memory for sound patterns, and children's ability to identify rhyme, syllables and individual sounds within words.

This professional learning program equips educators with the knowledge and practical strategies to intentionally develop phonological awareness in children aged two to six years. Participants explore the developmental progression of phonological awareness and learn how to embed evidence-informed practices into everyday interactions and playful learning experiences. They will build a repertoire of songs, rhymes and games that can be embedded throughout the day, in small group circle times, during transitions, incidentally in play - indoors and outdoors.

The workshop component of this program can be facilitated in-person, online or through a self-paced eCourse, making it accessible to a variety of sites. Importantly, these workshops are then complimented by three site-visits. These site-visits allow our consultants to support your unique context, personalise the learning and support your team to embed their new learning as shared pedagogical practices.

Expected outcomes include:

  • Strengthen pedagogical knowledge of phonological awareness.
  • Learn strategies for supporting children to develop phonological awareness.
  • Curate a bank of songs, fingerplays and rhymes to embed in the everyday learning flow with children.
  • Confidently articulate the connection between phonological awareness and children’s emergent literacy.

How this is delivered

This PL program has 2 components: workshop and site-visits. The workshop can be delivered in person, online or through a self-paced eCourse, of approx. 6 hours duration. Three follow-up site-visits enable consultants to tailor support to each context, personalise learning and assist teams to embed new knowledge into shared pedagogical practice. When possible, the site visits will be in-person and of 2 hours duration each. A resource pack is included

Cost

This program is delivered for $5,000 per site (5 and under staff) or $6,500 per site (6+ staff). If travel is required, this will be charged based on location. Travel of over hour from Adelaide CBD, incurs travel fee at ATO 2025-26 rate of 88 cents/km. Airfares invoiced if driving to site visits is not time efficient or appropriate.
