Description
CPRT is designed for parents and carers of preschool-aged children and focuses on practical skills that support emotional development, behavior, communication and confidence. Parents learn how to better understand and respond to their child’s feelings and needs using child-centered play therapy principles.
Each week, parents attend a structured group session facilitated by a qualified Play Therapist.
Sessions include:
- practical teaching and demonstrations
- role-play and group discussion
- coaching and feedback
- skills in empathic listening, reflective responding and encouragement
- limit-setting and choice-giving skills and
- workbook and resources to support practice at home.
Between sessions, parents complete a 30-minute “special playtime” with their child using a small therapeutic play kit. These sessions give parents the opportunity to practice new skills in a familiar setting and reflect on what they notice.
The program helps parents feel more confident, better equipped to respond to challenging behavior and feel more connected to their child.
Expected outcomes for children include:
- improved emotional awareness and self-regulation
- greater confidence in expressing feelings and needs
- stronger communication and problem-solving skills and
- increased trust, cooperation and connection with caregivers.
