Description

Let’s Tell Stories! is an adapted version of the Oral Narrative Intervention Programme (ONIP), a structured oral narrative program designed by Laura Glisson for 5–6 year old children. This adapted version has been developed by Sound Bites Therapy Services to support preschool-aged children to develop early narrative skills. Sound Bites speech pathologists will provide structured sessions, coaching and ongoing support to build skills in using oral language strategies that can be embedded into everyday learning, play and group experiences.

The program aims to build children’s ability to understand and express ideas through stories while developing vocabulary, sentence structure and early narrative skills. It promotes participation in shared storytelling and meaningful communication in play-based contexts.

Let’s Tell Stories! supports a language-rich environment where educators and families are supported to model language, extend thinking and scaffold children’s responses during everyday interactions and story-based activities.

Key components include:

  • Supported Story Retell: Opportunities to retell familiar stories using sequencing and visual supports.
  • Wh-Questioning: Modelling and support for understanding and responding to who, what, where, when, why and how questions.
  • Oral Language Scaffolding: Modelling vocabulary, sentence structure and narrative language.
  • Resources and Support: Practical tools and guidance for embedding strategies across routines and settings.

Expected outcomes for this program are:

For children:

  • Improved language and communication skills.
  • Improved confidence and participation in group communication and shared learning activities.

For educators and families:

  • Improved ability to implement strategies for promoting language development.
  • Improved understanding of language and communication development in early childhood.

How this is delivered

The Let’s Tell Stories! program is delivered by a qualified speech pathologist from Sound Bites Therapy Services and can be implemented within preschool settings or via flexible delivery options to suit service needs.

Program delivery options include:

  • in-person delivery within the preschool setting
  • live online delivery via virtual sessions and
  • hybrid delivery, combining in-person and online components.

Program structure includes:

  • 2 staff information sessions to introduce program strategies and resources
  • an 8-session program delivered over one preschool term
  • session duration of approximately 60-90 minutes
  • small group delivery (up to 6 children at a time with opportunities for all children to be involved), with strategies designed to be generalised across the wider learning environment and
  • approximately 3 hours of parent liaison for communication and resource sharing.

The program also includes time for data collection, monitoring and review to guide implementation and ensure responsiveness to children’s needs.

Participants are provided with practical resources and guidance to support ongoing use of oral narrative strategies beyond sessions. Delivery can be adapted to align with the routines and priorities of individual services while maintaining the core components of the program.

Cost

This program is delivered for $290.99 per 1.5-hour session. Educator and parent liaison, as well as data gathering and analysis components, are provided separately for $193.99 per hour.

The total cost of this program, including all recommended sessions and supports, is $4,461.81.

If travel is required, this will be charged based on location and negotiated prior to delivery. Country visits may be bundled with flights, car hire and/or accommodation as required. All costs are GST exclusive.
