Description

Kick Start Language & Literacy (KSLL) is a Speech Pathologist-developed program that brings evidence-based oral language and early literacy teaching into everyday preschool life. Through engaging, interactive video lessons, educators and children learn together, with practical strategies modelled in real time and reinforced through play, routines and meaningful everyday interactions.

Designed for busy preschool teams, KSLL strengthens the language learning already happening in your room. It supports educators to confidently embed intentional language teaching into their daily activities and routines, making every day a language-rich learning opportunity.

KSLL helps educators:

  • build confidence while children build essential language and literacy skills
  • target more than 30 oral language and early literacy skills that underpin school readiness
  • save planning time with ready-to-use, low-preparation teaching resources and family handouts
  • engage children through interactive, multisensory learning experiences they genuinely enjoy and
  • create lasting improvements in everyday teaching practice through practical, on-the-floor learning that continues long after the program finishes.

Rather than a one-off workshop, KSLL is like having a Speech Pathologist walking alongside your team, helping educators turn everyday moments into powerful opportunities for language learning.

Expected outcomes of this program:

  • improved understanding of oral language and early literacy development
  • improved ability to implement evidence-based language and literacy strategies through play-based learning
  • improved confidence embedding intentional language teaching across everyday routines, interactions and learning experiences and
  • improved ability to identify children at risk of language delay and engage families in supporting language development.

How this is delivered

Implementation begins with a live 1.5-hour online onboarding session with a Speech Pathologist. This interactive session introduces the program, provides practical language teaching strategies and tailors implementation to your service's routines and planning.

Services receive 12 months' access to the KSLL online platform, including:

  • 12 interactive, video-modelled child lessons
  • 20+ educator Quick Tip videos
  • ready-to-use learning experiences and low-preparation activities
  • printable activity sheets, visual supports and classroom posters and
  • implementation guides and family handouts.

Educators simply play each lesson alongside the children, learning practical strategies as they teach. The targeted language and early literacy skills are then reinforced through the suggested play-based learning experiences, shared reading, everyday routines and small-group activities.

The structured curriculum includes six themes, each targeting 5–6 oral language and early literacy goals. Services typically implement one theme over 3–6 weeks, allowing children repeated opportunities to learn, practise and consolidate new skills. The flexible format allows educators to work through the program over approximately 18–36 weeks, adapting the pace to suit their children and preschool calendar.

A follow-up implementation check-in with a Speech Pathologist, together with ongoing phone and email support, is provided to help educators maximise the program's impact.
